Ask Joe & Larry

Do I have to wear a snorkel?

No!

Actually, all training agencies require that students wear a snorkel during training, but in all honesty, you will see a lot of experienced divers who prefer not to wear a snorkel when diving. A snorkel has a tendency of getting in the way more than it helps during a lot of diving situations.

Since the snorkel is normally worn on the left side of the head, the tube hanging down is very close in feel to the inflator hose which comes over the same shoulder. This can cause confusion when reaching for the inflator. Also many divers feel that anything hanging on the mask is not such a great idea. If the snorkel bumps something, it is possible for the mask to become dislodged. Still others just don't like the drag of pulling it through the water.

Avid Snorkel There are however, times when a snorkel is a pretty handy device. If you are doing a long surface swim and want to look down as you swim, a snorkel comes in handy. It is also useful if you are in heavy wave action as it will help reduce the amount of water you might drink!

If your diving is like mine... these are rare occurances. So I rarely use a snorkel. And when I do, I like it to be handy, so I use one of the Avid Snorkels if and when I need it. This way I keep it hid in my pocket, so no one knows I have one.... which makes you look a bit like a rookie, but I just pull it out, fold it out, and extend it up when I need it!

I know some like having a snorkel all the time, and at those times the Dry Mojave Snorkel from Genesis is a top pick... but me... I'll use it just when I need it.
